remember me

Blueboy
oh how i missed thee 'remember me'. an absolute classic tune from 1996 that will no doubt get the old school clubbers out there all nostalgic for those early morning dances surrounded by mates with the sun rising across the rooftops.
i have this tune on various tapes/cassettes (remember those?) that I put on every now and again. its the one song that always gets me and I could never get it together to call my mate JC to play it for him trying to find out what it is. low and behold I was sitting in JC's living room last night, along with San, and the tune came on the TV, being used in a advert of some kind of another. Both myself and San got all excited as we love the tune and JC had the answer for me straight away. Ah...success.

From epitonic:
"When you hear Blue Boy's music you wouldn't in a million years imagine that it had been produced in Glasgow, Scotland. "Remember Me" in particular is honey-dipped in the voodoo-house vocals of America's Deep South, and sun-drenched in the tribal funk of Central and South America.

His most celebrated release to date, "Remember Me," is the centerpiece of the
Mushroom Jazz compilation, mixed by Mark Farina. It is an intoxicating blend of cut-up soul and loose disco grooves based on "Woman Of The Ghetto," from '70s Blue Note recording artist Marlena Shaw. "Remember Me" is soul on wax, pure and simple."

This is long version of the tune so enjoy each and every soulful minute.

electric picnic lineup update-bodytonic

Two lineup updates in one day for Electric Picnic. With only 7 weeks to go the anticipation is building..

bodytonic today announced some additions to their festivities and it definitely compliments the already impressive list of artists and DJs that they had:

New Additions to bill : Vince Watson Live / Shed Live / David Holmes / Richard Fearless / Black Acid Live / Twin Kranes / Andy Votel / Republik DJs / Shock / FVF Records / Simon Conway / POGO DJs ( Eddie Brennan) / Mr Jones DJs / Reach / 174

Prins Thomas & Lindstrom will play a 4 hour set in the Twisted Pepper tent on the Saturday night.

Electric City's Giles Armstrong will be playing an old school set - like the one he played at our warehouse party last year.

Playing the Bernard Shaw tent on the Sunday Trusme is playing Live for the first ever time and hopefully a dj set too.

electric picnic lineup update

Just added to the Electric Picnic lineup is:

Grace Jones
Joan as Policewoman
Dan Deacon
Booka Shade
Deadmau5

Looks like fun. Will be interesting to see the crazy fun that Dan Deacon brings with him in a festival setting and of course Grace Jones will likely be the highlight of the entire weekend. See you there!

star trek

Elaste

My apologies for the lack of posts of late. What with moving back to Ireland, playing catch-up with friends and family while partying quite a lot I haven't found the time or inclination to go out to track down new tunes. Tonight is different as I am trying to take a break from the madness and to maybe even get an early night. :)

With that said I just came across a great compilation on Compost. 'Elaste, volume2: space disco'. Compiled by Tom Wieland (7 Samurai) this is a trip into the world of, yes, you got it...space disco. I have to say though that this compilation knocks the proverbial socks off of most of the other compilations doing the rounds nowadays. According to Wieland “Most of these titles were fairly unknown when they were released, some became almost famous, and this is what this compilation is about: lost space disco gems and soulful Euro-boogie,” This is certainly filled with tunes that are somewhat less spacey and seem to be more dancefloor orientated with a keen eye on some old school flavours along with interesting interpretations such as the tune posted here.

This tune reflects some of the sounds of 7 Samurai with its disctinctive funky reggae hook and pace that is offset with some pretty trippy sounds that will have your head shooting into space as your body holds it down on the dancefloor.

I'd also recommend 'GI' by Panoptikum (another Wieland act) which is pure acid fun and the Rufus/Chaka Khan classic 'Ain't Nobody' that gets the Frankie Knuckles hallucinogenic remix treatment. I can't see it on any of the digial versions of the comp. but 20 Jazz Greats delivers the dub version for your listening pleasure.

au revoir texas

Texas

I am sitting on my porch on a 95 degree (Fahrenheit)/ 35 degree (Celsius ) evening here in Austin. I've spent pretty much every night over the past month like this. Listening to music, drinking beers, enjoying the heat and pretty much soaking up a particular lifestyle that I've become accustomed to.

Tomorrow I leave Texas which has been my adoptive home for the past 4 1/2 years. I am on my way back home to Ireland to start the next stage of my life.
I am very much looking forward to being closer to my family and friends there as, in all honesty, being away from them was the most difficult part to living half way around the world. This is not a disrespect to anyone that I have befriended since I arrived in the States 6 years ago, but I think you know that. ;)                          A new adventure lies ahead as I explore new opportunities and start to build on some of the 'virtual' friendships that I have formed through cubikmusik. London is a definite place for me to visit to have beers and chats about music and life with my friends at innersounds, dilated choonz, unusual & electric and beyond. I look forward to that day.

I have loved my time here in the States but have a special affinity for Texas. When I was moving here I was asked, on many occasions "why are you moving to Texas?". Why not I say? In fairness I moved to Austin which is quite different from most other parts of Texas but nonetheless...Texas it is and I still love it for what it is.

So, what will I miss about the great state of Texas, the amazing city of Austin and the States in general? Hard to remember everything that has brought me good times so if I left something out I apologize.
In no particular order, except the first which is always highest on my list, people:

The many, many, many great people that I have had the honor and privilege of sharing part of my life with in various capacities. Some will go unmentioned (as they don't read cubikmusik, but will know how I feel about them) but others I will call out.
Sergio and Josh in San Diego who I got to share much time with talking about and listening to great music and generally enjoying company.
Jodi from San Diego who will always be a dear friend to me. I miss you Jodi.
Doug over at AustinSound. Doug, keep on keepin' on mate. You're on the right track with what you do.
Mr.Curiosity (Lawrence) who taught me to try and be more sponge-like when it comes to music ,that the little things in life really don't matter and to live life to the fullest.
Michael at Sonic Itch Music who is full of surprises and an absolute pleasure to hang out and work with.
The do512 crew who welcomed me, and others, into their offices, lives and parties so that everyone could feed off the exciting energy that they have.
Dev and the BlogFreshRadio crew. A pleasure to have gotten to know virtually and then to have been able to hang out at SXSW was superb,
Each and every one of you is always welcome to come visit in Ireland someday (soon). I have also met countless others be it briefly or over varying periods of time so please know that those times I treasure also.

Here's a run down of some of my favourite places and things that I leave behind:

the salt lick. (Its in a 'dry county' so you get to BYOB),

Hut's Hamburger's

fireman's #4 (brewed in Austin..i love it!),

el chilito ,

mean eyed cat (the best damn johnny cash shrine in the world),

the side bar (best damn jukebox in a bar),

the heat (gimme hot over cold anyday),

waterloo records,

bird's barbershop (I was pretty close to trying to open up a barbershop like this in Austin as there was a serious opening in the market. Along came Bird's to save me all the hard work. How can you beat a cold beer and video-games while you wait for a haircut?)

Going to East Texas, hanging out over good food, lively conversation and shooting guns. (Yeh, I know. Not PC to like guns and stuff but it sure is fun shooting clay pigeons and coke cans for an hour or two on a Saturday in the sun!).

Road trips across the many, many miles of roads with little or no traffic, the sun and a stereo blaring out top tunes as you race down the highway at 80+ miles per hour.

Balboa Park in San Diego.

Vegas Baby! (so many great memories from that crazy town).

Padres games (especially in their amazing new stadium).

The Spurs (next year Rick, next year).

Disneyland (always an amazing time with family trips there).

sxsw (what a guaranteed fun time)

last but not least....sitting on my back porch with an ice cold beer, listening to crickets and watching fireflies all over my garden. Its a beautiful thing.

I will return to Austin, hopefully making SXSW a regular trip each year but will also come back to visit friends across the States so that I can further explore this country that welcomed me with open arms.

So, with that. goodbye ya'll.

figure me out

Floorwhacks
much thanks to the excellent floorman for posting this superb edit of Jamie Lidell's 'figured me out'.
I'll let the man himself say a few words:

"Here's something I've been playing out for the past couple of weeks -my Jamie Lidell edit. The new album has had a mixed reception, and I think the production's a bit disappointing in places - possibly playing it a bit too safe - but there's no denying the man's got some voice for a skinny white bloke, and he can cut it live: just hope he retains some of the madness of his old live shows now he seems to be heading for the mainstream..."

i highly recommend you add the floorman blog to your regular reading list as he posts some great stuff (for a limited time). i hope to get to see him play out some day soon as i reckon its a great show.

cheebah (and all that)

Cheebah_for_june

big shout out to my mate Adam from Unusual & Electric and the Cheebah crew in Limerick, Ireland. They have a top weekend planned for June 27th and I am hoping to try and make it down there.

Adam spins some choice tunes (he turned me onto Blundetto's 'bossy' tune amongst manner others) and he covers a wide spectrum of sounds with reggae, hip-hop, house, bass and all round good times music.
I know that the Cheebah crew gets a top crowd that will definitely be down for those sounds so it'll be a great night. Drop by if you're in the area. Hopefully see ya'll there.

get it on

Single_minded

sleeve from 'sleeve & lowman' fame as featured on cubikmusik back in November 2006, brings us back with some old school sample slinging covering de la soul, arrested development and more with this choice summer tune that you can be sure to drop to get everyone smiling and grooving. I know that a certain JC will be into this and I look forward to playing this on a (hopefully) sunny Friday afternoon in his back yard in two weeks.

Out on the excellent 'single minded' compilation from Freestyle Records that also brought you Lack of Afro (cubikmusik post here) amongst others such as Chaka Khan, Fred Wesley, Soulive, Chali 2Na.
Check out some pretty impressive accolades on Freestyle Records here.

bodytonic @ electric picnic

Bt_ep_teaser_2

this is where i'll be spending a lot of my time at this year's Electric Picnic.

The Bodytonic Village has an assortment of fine tuneage from around the world with the highlights for me being Diplo (saw him around 3 times at SXSW and had a blast every time), Kerri Chandler (have never managed to see this legend so this is a treat), The Count and Sinden, Modeselector, Roni Size/ Reprazent (hopefully covering some 'New Form's material), DJ Spinna, Stee Downes (label manager for Bodytonic label,Scribble, see below), Stereotonic DJs, Bodytonic Soundsystem, Christian Pommer/Drum Lesson and pretty much 90% of the lineup.

After being in Texas for 4 years or so I've been starved of a good dose of dance music so this should hit the spot. Nice one to the Bodytonic crew for putting this together. Top fun.

For some Scribble magic see here and here.

P.S. I'll be the grinning fool to the left of the speakers! :)
